I chose Freiston for my Monday outing, rather than Frampton for a change. There were still a good few whimbrels on the saltmarsh, with hirundines all over the place. Twenty odd yellow wags on the reservoir.
Between Freiston shore and the Witham mouth I counted 10 clouded yellow butterflies, most I’ve seen in a day.
A couple of marsh harriers put in great views.
A surprisingly large gathering of terns were resting on the mud at the mouth. c.300 commons, and c.75 sandwich was a good count. A black tern appeared offshore, some of the others taking a dislike to it. It lingered out from the Welland mouth for a while, fishing. Surprising that no skuas were attracted to the area.
